Instagram impulsa la lectura de poesía entre los jóvenes de EE.UU

Por primera vez en más de 20 años, la lectura de poesía está creciendo en los EE.UU, según datos publicados por el «National Endowment for the Arts» (NEA). El porcentaje de estadounidenses que dijeron haber leído poesía en los 12 meses anteriores fue del 11,7% en 2017, frente al 6,7% en 2012. Alrededor de 17.600 adultos participaron en este estudio, del que se ha hecho eco Quartz.  Se trata de una gran noticia para la poesía porque, desde 1992, la lectura se este género literario se hallaba en un declive constante.

Por si fueran pocas buenas noticias para la poesía norteamericana, su lectura creció más entre los jóvenes de 18 a 24 años, con un 17,5% diciendo que en 2017 leyeron poesía, en comparación con el 8,2% en 2012.

in the midst of so many suicides that have taken place this year— i feel terrified. sometimes i myself feel so trapped in the dark it feels like the only way out is to end it all. i know that’s not the answer. i’m lucky that the other part of my mind— the one that feels like it still belongs to me. the part fighting the darkness wins and i find the motivation to walk out into the sun and try another day. ? depression has its phases. this sickness is more difficult to understand & comprehend than any other experience i’ve had. ? when you hear the news & you see musicians artists and folks you deeply admire take their own life — it leaves me speechless. i always feel 2 things: 1) if they with all their knowledge support & access to resources couldn’t beat this thing- how the hell will i? & my next thought is — 2) we will get through this. we have to. i message my loved ones who are suffering from depression & other mental illness & tell them that we are in this lonely battle TOGETHER ? today i feel broken but i feel hopeful. & i’m sharing these details because it breaks me how some of you feel so alone you want to leave. i don’t want any of you to feel stuck at the first feeling that i mentioned above. i do not want you all to think that depression is an end & that there’s no way out. that’s the sickness talking. IT IS NOT YOU. when you feel low & find it difficult to reach out because your mind says “no one cares or understands” or “i’m bothering folks” THAT IS THE SICKNESS TALKING. pick up the phone. call up your loved ones. we’re not going to get through this battle alone. it takes a village. we have to keep trying until we find solutions that work for us. (strict routine. drawing. exercise work for me) we as a society have the power to make things better or worse. even when it comes to this sickness. we have to hold ourselves accountable for how we treat people. how we have dialogue in public & private spaces & ask ourselves: could i have been kinder? & more supportive? & then be kinder. be more supportive. sending all my light to those who’ve lost loved ones to this disease ? i love you. i love us. i love the potential of humanity.

Sin, y Yrsa Daley-Ward, sean un factor importante en el cambio. Los dos libros de Kaur han pasado un total de 145 semanas en la lista de best-sellers del New York Times.

Jennifer Benka, directora ejecutiva de la Academia de Poetas Estadounidenses, dijo a Quartz que esta es la explicación más probable: «Hay que destacar el fenómeno de la gran cantidad de seguidores y ventas de libros Rupi Kaur y otros poetas que comparten su trabajo en las redes sociales y que han contribuido a mejorar la relación de los jóvenes y la poesía «.

Los poemas de Rupi Kaur hacen referencia a temas como el feminismo, la inmigración o el amor, sin embargo, la fama le llegaría con una fotografía en la que aparecía tumbada de espaldas en la cama manchada con sangre de menstruación.

En España también se vive un eclosión de la lectura de poesía con jóvenes como David Galán, Victoria Ash, María Sánchez, Loreto Sesma, Elvira Sastre, Elena Mendel, Defreds, Angel Zero o Marwan. Junto a ellos, conviven en las redes otros poetas veteranos como Benjamín Prado, Luis Alberto de Cuenca, Ajo o Karmelo Irribarren, cuyos versos se difunden como la pólvora en internet.

Otro fenómeno a tener en cuenta es el de Acción Poética, que trata de cambiar el paisaje urbano, a menudo hiriente, mediante poesías breves escritas en mayúsculas sobre fondo blanco y con temática variada, también gozan de mucho predicamento entre los jóvenes. Su contenido  incluye desde frases inspiradoras a versos de amor. Por lo general, los autores se mantienen en el anonimato y firman con el nombre del movimiento, aunque a veces también plasman en los muros reflexiones o fragmentos de obras de autores consagrados.
